UPDATE 3/2/06:
"When I first came to live with my foster mom, I was skinny and really sick. Now I'm doing great! My hobbies are singing and chewing my toys. I also like to play what my mom calls king of the jungle. I climb to the highest perch on my play gym and flap my wings like crazy while I'm looking up and when I'm looking down surveying my kingdom. I sometimes sing at the same time. I can multi-task. On my right foot I have one toe in the front and one in the back, but this hasn't stopped me from doing everything a bird with all 4 toes can do. My foster mom taught me how to step up, but I don't always want to. She sometimes has to ask me twice. I get busy and just can't be bothered, but I'm a good bird. I won't bite. Even when I was sick and my foster mom had to give me medicine I never did bite. Nobody seems to know exactly how old I am. I'm not a baby, but I'm not an old man either. I eat seeds, pellets, fruits, rice and veggies mostly. I think my foster mom is trying to get me to eat more pellets and less seed. I like to sit in a bowl of water to bathe on a warm day, but my foster mom sprays me anyway. Spraying's OK, but I'd rather relax in a nice bath. I'm doing fine in my foster home, but I'd love to have a forever home!"
Herman is a very handsome white face cockatiel. He was a stray and not a lot is known about his origins. When he first came to his foster home, he was listless and very skinny. He wouldn?t even perch. He just sat mute on the bottom of his cage. He never made a sound. I did not know what he sounded like until about 4 weeks after he had been here. He would only eat millet. We?re trying to expand his dietary repertoire. He isn?t too crazy about the antibiotic injections he?s had to endure for the last 6 weeks. I could tell he was getting better when he started vigorously resisting the injections. The antibiotics must really be helping because he started steadily gaining weight daily until he was about 15 grams heavier than when he arrived. He started to spend more time off the cage bottom and on the perches. After about 4 weeks he started singing a little at first and only in private when he could hear the outside birds singing. He now sings a couple of different and elaborate cockatiel songs for anybody who will listen. The latest development nearly 6 weeks later is that he will perch on my finger and on a playstand. He will sit near me and allow touching without being frightened. He?s come a long way from the frightened, sickly fellow he once was. Now if I can get him off the millet and on the pellets that would be great. He does like sprouted wheat breads, sometimes broccoli, and usually will nibble an apple slice. Notice: Cockatiels are flock animals, and most of them are much happier when they live with at least one other cockatiel! Because of this, unless a household currently includes another cockatiel, Mickaboo usually requires that a minimum of two cockatiels be adopted.
