Update 01/16/2009: From Gus' foster home: Gus is really becoming quite the handsome fella. His feathers are coming in nicely and he doesn't pluck anymore. He stays busy watching the birds outside and playing with his toys and feather dusters. He is quite the clown and likes most people... even me! Hello, my name is Gus (though I've earned the nickname "Gustov" because my temporary daddy says I'm a very majestic cockatoo :). I am a young (about 10 years) Goffin's cockatoo. I lived in a home alone with my original mommy for many years and clearly I got a lot attention from her. But then her boyfriend and his kids moved into the house and I didn't get much attention after that. The boyfriend smoked, and the kids poked my cage, and I got very very stressed out. As a result, I picked alot of my feathers out. They went on vacation and they left me completely alone and I got stressed out so much that I picked my chest until I accidentally cut my chest. My mommy decided she couldn't deal with me and surrendered me to Mickaboo. My local vet put stitches in my chest and a cone around my head to let me heal. My temporary daddy and mommy have been very nice to me, but I am very shy of men in particular. I'll take food out of mommy's hand, but not daddy's (yet). Still, when I got scared at the vets office, I jumped into daddy's hands and snuggled my head into his chest! I am sure that I could be a very sweet bird, but I know that I need a predictable lifestyle and good food and attention. I am a very good eater! I eat my pellets, though of course I'll toss them aside to eat a sunflower seed (I only get a few as treats once a day). I like pasta, rice, squash, carrot shreds, bread crust (which is how my daddy gave me the medicine I needed to heal quickly (it's not really good for me but I like to make a mess with it), nutriberries, and I am trying new things everyday. I like to eat with the flock: when daddy and mommy eat, I also like to have to some food. I like to be part of the crowd. I love the sun, and really enjoy having my daddy and mommy take me onto the porch (in my cage of course) and work on my tan! Daddy also says that I am the quietest cockatoo he has ever met! I don't talk, but I do occasionally utter the classic goffins noises: I honk quietly when I am a bit distressed over something or I see something scary. I also "whaaack" nicely when I am alone and want some company. Daddy puts some different size perches in my cage and gave me some new toys, and I've shown him that I am pretty smart! I put food on top of my toys and use it as a dinner table, since eating can be a bit tricky while I still have my cone on (so I don't pick at my healing chest). I'd love to find a home where I could get some regular attention, even just being able to sit and watch daddy type on the computer while I sit on my cage is great! I know it will take a little patience for me to warm up to new people after all I have been through, but I know that I will eventually be worth it. Notice: Due to the notoriously difficult nature of cockatoos, Mickaboo prefers that cockatoos not be a households' first parrot.
