Hello, I'm Nakita, "Naki" for short. Nakita means, "unconquerable". That describes me well. You see, I went through an extremely traumatic event and survived. I was turned into a shelter as a "stray". The couple claimed they found me that way. What is believed to have happened to me is that my leg was, literally, chewed or pulled off by a raccoon through cage bars while I was outdoors. Gosh, just telling you about it makes me shudder all over again. Mickaboo was contacted immediately, picked me up, and rushed me to an avian vet who specializes in cockatoos. She saved my life. I have healed extremely quickly, but emotionally I will have a long recuperation time. I am very, very fearful of people as well any noises or changes. I used to scream and thrash about in my cage all the time. It is less so now but I still have a long way to go. I am with a foster family now who loves cockatoos - and they are being very patient with me. I have a room all to myself with a night light so I can see what's going on. My foster mom has set me up with special low perches and a large rope at the bottom of my cage so I can get around. I have also learned to use my beak and one leg to 'ambulate' as well. I am getting stronger and stronger and can perch for periods of time on my one leg! I like a variety of foods including pellets, pasta, fruits and veggies. Oh, and did I mention that I am so very handsome? I am a pink and grey rose-breasted, 'galah' cockatoo. Think good thoughts for me so that I am able to overcome this stressful time in my life so that I can be a companion bird once again. Notice: Due to the notoriously difficult nature of cockatoos, Mickaboo prefers that cockatoos not be a households' first parrot.
