Update, 1 Aug 2008: After just a few days in foster care, Kafka has made a good deal of progress. He is eating organic sprouts, peas, corn, and home grown mint leaves, and has begun to nibble at pellets. He is still wary of human hands but will call out for human companionship when nobody is nearby. His singing voice, which was raspy and tentative at first, has grown strong and self-assured. He loves to watch the birds at the feeder through his picture window. Kafka will make a very rewarding companion for the right person, someone who will be patient with him and give him a chance to trust people again.
Kafka here. I was found outdoors in Contra Costa County and taken to the Martinez Shelter. I spent a day or two in the bunny room there (which, believe me, is much better than the cat room!) before a Mickaboo volunteer came to get me. So far, I am quite shy around humans and need a lot of space to get used to my new surroundings. I don't remember how old I am (or if I do I am not telling) but my foster parents say that, judging from my feathers and my skin, I don't look very old or very young. So let's just say I'm an adult and let it go at that! I'm also not telling whether I'm a male or female but my bright orange cheeks and occasional bursts of song indicate that I'm a male. So far, I love mist baths, millet and the sound of the other birds here. As I get settled in, I will learn about more good foods and human companionship. Check back for updates on how I am doing.
