IN MEMORIAM 3/18/06: The lovely pied Benson died suddenly this week. Though she had not been with us long enough, she had already formed a tight bond with Rocky. Whenever Benson could not see him, she would squawk loudly. She hadn't yet given Rocky the privilege of preening her feathers, but that would have come soon. She also loved to snuggle into her soft "Birdy Buddy" upright "bed." In fact, there were two new ones waiting for her return from the vet, but we are so sorry she won't be here to use them. We miss her so. It is hard to believe that such a small creature could leave such a big empty space in our lives. Not only do good things come in small packages, sometimes they come in soggy cardboard boxes. I'm Benson, a female "stray" cockatiel, who was brought to a shelter in a wet box in the rain. It seems I had been attacked by a cat. Probably I was also starving, as I weighed just 77 grams. Antibiotics, food, and warmth saved my life. Antibiotics are still part of my daily routine because my preen gland was infected. But I am on the mend and getting very strong. My weight is up to 112 grams! My beauty is shining again, too, so you can admire my cinnamon pied feathering. Showering is great fun and makes my feathers glow. I will step up, in my own fashion, usually running across the hand offered to me. I love to hang out with other cockatiels and am not very noisy. I know I don't belong in a cardboard box, but maybe I belong with you? Notice: Cockatiels are flock animals, and most of them are much happier when they live with at least one other cockatiel! Because of this, unless a household currently includes another cockatiel, Mickaboo usually requires that a minimum of two cockatiels be adopted. Print this page |
