UPDATE 1/20/2008: Princess Grace has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. She was a sweet girl who made Rainier very happy. Grace will be missed and never, ever forgotten. We are Princess Grace and Prince Rainier, recently rescued from exile at an animal shelter. We are a very bonded pair of pied cockatiels, about 4 1/2 years old. When we first came to Mickaboo, we were incognito. OK, we were filthy. But now that we have enjoyed a wonderful bath, our royal beauty is shining for all to see. We even have a cockatiel crown of feathers, though Grace is missing a few jewels in her crown due to Rainier?s great preening skills. Unfortunately, we have not eaten like a king and queen in the past, being given little but seed. We?re learning to enjoy greens, though, and may develop a taste for a healthier menu. We also may enjoy handling if you're patient with us. Right now, we like to have our subjects (er, people) around us but we are wary of hands. If you're patient and understand how to treat birds royally, we would love to come rule in your home! UPDATE 2/23/06: "Grace and Rainier are very sweet in their own way. They aren't crazy about hands, but will step up when they want to get back to their cage. They never bite and they seem to enjoy being part of our "flock". Rainier is a very handsome, loud male cockatiel. When we first picked him up from the shelter, he would make a car alarm noise when he got excited. He still does the car alarm from time to time (especially when he is desperate for Grace's attention), but now he mostly likes to imitate the song of our other male cockatiel, which he does to perfection. Personally, I find his singing entertaining, but whoever adopts him should know that he is not a quiet bird! Grace, on the other hand, is very quiet, but that doesn't prevent her from being the boss of Rainier. She always has the best perch and first dibs on treats. Even though Rainier adores Grace, he is a bit of an oaf when it comes to grooming Grace's head feathers and he usually ends up plucking them. Grace squawks and then puts her head down for more. Grace and Rainier are completely converted to pellets and are particularly fond of greens. These two are very much bonded to each other, so they would have to be adopted as a pair. They are the first pair that my husband and I have fostered, and we have enjoyed watching them interact. As a pair, they are relatively easy to care for. Unlike our single cockatiels, they don't demand attention the minute we step into the room. They are happy to see us and want to be in the same room with us, but mostly they entertain themselves (and us!). They would be good for someone who takes pleasure in the company of birds, but doesn't want a needy pet. They would also be great for someone who wants to expand their flock." Print this page |
