UPDATE 4/18/08: We are very sad to report that we lost Maudie today. She had health problems stemming from her unhealthy reproductive system. We did all we could for this little one but it just wasn't enough. We miss her already and are thankful that she touched our lives. Please see Maudie's story by clicking on the "IN MEMORIAM" link under the "See Our Birds" tab. Jordan (Sir Bites-A-Lot) and his good Lady Maudie (The Empress of Flap) once lived in a retirement home in Oakland, where they had two sons. Due to an accident Jordan's left wing was fractured and he was no longer able to fly. After three years of living here they and their sons were adopted by a woman who loved them very much but was, unfortunately, unable to keep them. Mickaboo was notified of their need and a volunteer went to their home to arrange their removal to a new kingdom. Imagine his surprise upon learning that they had originally lived at his mother's retirement home in Oakland where he volunteered on weekends to clean cages and feed them and five other birds. Their Majesties are now in the care of their original servant and are working mightily to train him to their exacting standards. The servant is working mightily to convince them that pellets and other things are an acceptable substitute for seeds only. Daily activities include: Much preening of Themselves and each other, chest-to-chest beak wrestling (interspersed with nips, squawks and various screeches), much tearing and rending of various toys. Twice a day both doors of the flight cage are opened to allow freedom of movement. Maudie's favorite place to preen is the upper door of the flight cage; much as if she was sitting on the front porch of a mansion, however, she is not too sure about climbing outside. Jordan, on the other hand, insists on his right to climb as high as possible to survey his kingdom from the roof and sides of the royal dwelling. And once a day (or more) some noise must cause a panic (or flap, as the English would say?). The elements of the Daily Panic usually run thusly: A tilting of the head, followed by a gleam in The Empress' eye; with a shriek she is airborne to speed about the room several times! Eventually she alights upon the most inconvenient spot available to be scooped up by the servant and hurried into incarceration once more. At the same moment Sir Bites-a-Lot will hurl himself skyward! Inevitably he hits the floor with a thud and proceeds to squawk loudly in panicked indignation until the servant rushes to provide elevator service.
As their nicknames suggest, neither of them are hand tamed, although Jordan may have been at one time as he will allow the servant to lift him up and down from the cage (occasionally). Depending upon mood he will bite very hard or very lightly. Maudie is very wary of hands; however, the servant IS allowed to sneak his ears up occasionally to ascertain the noise of respiration.
All in all, life is pretty good.
