UPDATE (4/8/06): "Snoopy is a reformed delinquent who has won over our hearts. When I first took him in as a temporary charge in foster care, he was a little feisty and defensive. He had a history of plucking his own feathers until there were bald spots on him. He was reluctant to come out of his cage, and he pecked my hand when I tried to take him out. Today he is social and loving. He steps up willingly to come to the kitchen table any time of day, and he shares breakfast with his cockatiel friend Chloe and with us. He is an older guy (17), but doesn't show his age. He is a gorgeous lemon yellow, handsome and charming, with every one of his own feathers. We have discovered that in the right mood he sings like a nightingale. I first noticed this talent when I was playing Brahms on the CD player near his cage. A beautiful warbling note came out Snoopy's throat that I had never heard before. Since then during the mid-morning hours I notice he occasionally makes this fluty sound. Anyway, a year has passed without anyone calling to adopt him, and I realized that I would miss him terribly if anyone did. So it came to me that it was time to adopt Snoopy myself and make him a permanent member of our household. It's definitely a Mickaboo success story!" UPDATE 3/14/05 Here is a report from Snoopy's foster mom: "Snoopy is a beautiful lemon-yellow 'tiel with gray markings. He has been through a lot -- a lonely year in a basement and then a roommate cockatiel he didn't get along with, but he is recovering his joie de vivre. He's coming out of a funk and discovering that it's fun exploring outside his cage, especially with another bird to set an example and foster parents to encourage him. He is always a good eater: pellets and sunflower seeds and Avicakes are his favorite. Before he came here, he had a problem plucking his own feathers, but now that he's back in a private room -- well, a cage of his own, he has relaxed and hasn't plucked a single feather. He is quite social and enjoys sitting on my shoulder for hours. I think he is territorial because he will generally peck at a human's hand in his cage, but outside his cage he is happy to step up on a finger and down on a table or perch, especially if you'll take him somewhere he wants to go. He's got flair and strong opinions." Happiness is a warm cockatiel! Hello, my name is Snoopy, and I'm just that . . . a warm, charismatic, 13 year-old pied tiel with beautiful plumage. My original human companion had to give me to her daughter when she couldn't keep me anymore. As soon as that happened, my out-of-cage playtime pretty much went down to zero. After a year and a half of this, I was, needless to say, nursing quite a case of cabin fever and loneliness. Luckily, my new keeper had heard about Mickaboo and gave them a call. A few days later, I was in my new foster home. Since my cage and all my toys came with me, I felt right at home there and began checking out the surroundings. I made it obvious from the start that I wanted somebody to relate to and a little time to stretch my wings, so I was REALLY happy to see my cage door open and my foster dad take me out! He thinks that I was very tame and socialized once and that I just need to relearn that behavior pattern. I'm still scared of fingers but the joy of getting out and being part of a "flock" again more than makes up for that. I love music, sunny windows, exercise, and singing -- I know the wolf-whistle, part of the Russian Sailor's Dance, and a few happy cockatiel songs that I made up for special occasions. My diet is mainly seeds so far but I am nibbling at the pellets and green leafy stuff called "kale" that I get here. I hope to go to a permanent home where I can have lots of companionship and love and will give the same gladly and with a song in my heart. If you'd like me to come do the Snoopy-dance into your home, let the folks at Mickaboo know!

Notice: Cockatiels are flock animals, and most of them are much happier when they live with at least one other cockatiel! Because of this, unless a household currently includes another cockatiel, Mickaboo usually requires that a minimum of two cockatiels be adopted.
