UPDATE 9/22/05, from Alex's foster mom: "Alex has been a challenge, but she's come with a big reward! All the different homes were really taking their toll on her, and she came to me with some trust issues. We thought initially she preferred men but that has proven to be untrue. If you can handle Alex with confidence and establish dominance, then she can become a loving companion to a man OR woman! She has made such a turnaround! She steps up easily, enjoys climbing on her play gym, and she LOVES to take showers with me and will splash around and even preen my eyelashes! I think she and I have formed a close bond and I feel so lucky to be a part of this special little girl's life. I hope someone else will also see how amazing she is and give her a FOREVER home!"
UPDATE 6/3/05: Alex was adopted earlier this year, but unfortunately, it appears that Alex is not a good match for her new home. Although her new mom has tried to work with her, Alex is aggressive towards her and the other bird in the house (a cockatiel). Her mom feels that Alex does not want to be with her, and that she would be better off in another home, perhaps with a male parent. Alex seemed very happy and affectionate with her foster dad, and she may prefer being around men.
UPDATE 3/27/04: What a change! I'm so happy now, and there's nothing I'd rather do than walk around with my person and have him stroke any of my feathers --even my 11-inch-long tail. I?ve learned to step up, and I run to him when he comes in the room. I don't make my loud jungle call anymore, except when a stranger comes in the room, because I?m a good watchbird. My person learned that my little habits are actually friendly: like pinpointing my eyes for a second or opening my beak once when he approaches. I click and coo, and he has gotten it through his head that I want some attention and affection. If you're looking for a happy affectionate bird, the Queen of Parakeets, won't you please take me, Alexandra the Alexandrine, home?
Hi! My name is Alex. That's short for Alexandra, because I'm a she. I'm also an Indian ringnecked parakeet. Don't let that "parakeet" name let you think that I'm a budgie. In fact, your garden-variety budgie parakeet isn't as long as my tail! Birds like me fly wild in India, but here I am a little bit exotic. I am a mystery bird. I appeared at an animal shelter in San Jose in a very shabby cage. I was always in good health, but people don't know too much about my history. I guess they will have to learn to talk like a parrot. It's pretty clear I've never been abused. I do a little talking ("Hello!") and I like to chatter to myself when I am in a good mood, which I often am. I eat pellets, seeds, fruit, crackers (especially the animal kind), nuts, corn, just about anything. With a little bit of work I will sit on your finger. I am not afraid of people and a couple of times I have flown onto the shoulders of my new foster owner. Although I have a handsome red, shiny beak I haven't bitten anyone. My wings were recently clipped and it has made me much more mellow. Now I like to walk around on the floor and explore things. I am just on the verge of becoming man's (or woman's) best friend. Won't you please take me home so we can work on this together? Love, Alex
