Who the heck are Fred and Ethel? At some point, everyone comes across the names 'Fred and Ethel'. It may be an offhand reference to a funny couple. Or an unusual relationship between two people such as 'they act like Fred and Ethel'. Who were these two people? If you are old enough to remember the "I Love Lucy" show, Lucille 'Lucy' Ball and Desi 'Ricky' Arnaz were the main characters, supported by their neighbors 'Fred and Ethel'. Fred and Ethel had a different relationship that America took to heart as the less than perfect, but more realistic, example of an older couple. The names Fred and Ethel became synonymous with a loving couple that had their quirks but always supported each other in the end. Like their TV namesakes, Fred and Ethel rally around each other every time. This beautiful, blue-fronted Amazon couple have been together for many years. They are like the little loving couple you see on old black and white movies, enjoying each other's company above any others. They are quite content by themselves. Our Fred and Ethel are a little unusual, too. Most Mickaboo birds are not 'sexed'. With one or two exceptions, you cannot easily tell a male from a female bird. ('Buster' might actually be a girl, or 'Sweetie Pie' a boy!) But both Fred and Ethel have been tested and their male and femaleness confirmed scientifically. Fred will play with wooden toys, like most amazons. Well, maybe 'play' is not the right word. How about 'destroy', the common behavior. Amazons love to chew and wood is the common choice. Left by themselves in a room with an UNlocked cage, this couple will gladly explore the area, looking for places that might be a new nesting area. And if there is wood? Consider that a play area. Ethel is not the playful type, content to wait for more time with her sweetie. Gazing out a window is her fun. Big raw veggie eaters, these guys love fresh vegetables, so feeding is a breeze. Think snap peas, green beans, even thai chili peppers for a treat. And like many Amazons, they can get overweight. Ethel is cutting down on starchy vegetables to regain her girlish figure. Don't tell them, but they also eat bird food- and they like different hard food. One likes the colored fruity flavored and the other likes the hard cube pellets. Just like an older couple with their own little ways! Do you live in a house left empty for many hours? Do both of you work? Or single and working full time job away from the house? If you know Amazons, and can handle their sometimes grumpy behavior, this may be the perfect pair. They can be left alone longer than most birds because they have each other for entertainment and support. They will have the typical adaptation period that all Amazons require. Some stick training may also be required to get hem to 'step up.'. But this couple is happy and healthy. Notice: Due to the sometimes difficult nature of amazons, Mickaboo prefers that amazons not be a households' first parrot.
